Wigan Athletic Ladies Update Compiled and Researched by Rod & Josie Prescott 12.04.18

Congratulations To The Development Squad .

The Wigan Athletic Ladies Development Team , their Management and Supporters did their club proud on Sunday , when they managed to retain the Lancashire F.A. County League Cup at the County Ground . Indeed , it proved to be a double celebration for the Borough of Wigan , when earlier in the day , Hindley Juniors ran out 5-4 winners over Barrow Celtic Junior Comets in the Lancashire F.A. County League Plate Final .  In front of a superb crowd of around 300 spectators , the Wigan Development Team had to work extremely hard against a very strong looking and more experienced Burnley Belvedere Ladies side , but the Wigan youngsters stuck to their task and were very unlucky not to have won the game in normal time .  It was fitting when on 72 minutes , Charlotte Evans scored her fifth goal in the competition , having scored in every round of the knock out stages .  The one goal lead looked to have secured the cup , but one minute into injury time Burnley equalised with a well taken goal from their Captain Kirsty Ditchfield . The cup rules sent the game straight through to penalties and Wigan kept their nerve to score all three , with the new ABBA sequence rules applying . In contrast , the three penalties taken by Burnley all went wide of the target , meaning that Wigan would win by a 3-0 score line , without having to take all five spot kicks .

With the Development Team now having won the County League Cup Trophy twice and the Senior team having won the NWWRFL  Argyle Regional Plate twice (2006-07 &  2014-15) it meant that the club has never lost a Senior Cup Final in which it has competed , a truly remarkable record to hold !

The victorious cup winning team from Sunday reads as follows :

1 Nicole Cassier 2 Vicky Johnson 3 Celine Collins 4 Faye Bryne 5 Katie Burke 6 Alex Cullen (C) 7 Chelsea Bloor 8 Flossie Jones 9 Alice Lane 10 Georgia Atherton 11 Ellie Brown

Substitutes : Roll on Roll off Rules : 12 Lilly Butcher rep G. Atherton 63 min , 14 Karen Graham rep F. Bryne 40 min , 15 Ellie Cleary rep A. Lane 40 min , 16 Charlotte Evans rep E. Brown 24 min , 17 Olivia Williams rep C. Collins 80 min.

Winning Penalty Sequence :  Alex Cullen , Faye Bryne and Charlotte Evans all scored .   Touchline Star Player :  Nicole Cassier

Manager :  Danny Mather   Assistants :  Jeff Johnson , Jon Burke and Donna Harris

Success in the County F.A. League Cup has put the Development Team into playing catch up with their league fixtures . The club somehow have ten fixtures yet to fulfil , beginning this Sunday with the visit of North Lancs District Development Centre to Billinge F.C. , Kick Off 2pm .  ” Come down and Support the Cup Winners ”

The Senior Team :

This Sunday Wigan Athletic Ladies will travel over to the Fylde Coast to take on Fleetwood Town Wrens ( formerly Blackpool Wren Rovers ) in a ” double header ” league fixture .  Since the clubs formation in 1999 , the Wigan team have only previously contested one double header match . This took part in season 2015-16 , when we entertained City of Manchester at home on March 13th  , recording a 2-0 win , followed by a 1-1 draw . We were also scheduled to play a double header at home to Accrington Girls on April 3rd 2016 , but the match never went ahead .

Presently standing in fifth place with 32 Points , Fleetwood Town Wrens will be a difficult challenge , especially over the course of two matches . The Wrens have Won 9 , Drawn 5 , Lost 4 , Scored 50 and Conceded 27  goals .  The four defeats came against MSB Woolton at home on Sept. 24th (1-4) , Tranmere Rovers away on Nov. 5th (1-2)  ,  Burnley F.C. Girls away on Feb. 11th (0-4) and  Accrington Sports away   on Wednesday evening  (0-2) . Fleetwood were extremely unlucky to be relegated from the F.A. Women’s Premier League Northern Division One last season , having secured 18 points , and only losing out by a three goal difference with third bottom  Crewe Alexandra , also on 18 points  . The Wrens have spent 17 seasons within the NWWRFL and a very creditable 11 seasons in the Northern Combination / FAWPL . Tranmere Rovers were also relegated back to the NWWRFL Premier Division last season , having attained just 7 points .

Due to the Fleetwood Town Wrens usually being in a higher league then ourselves , we have only met them four times in league fixtures and it makes for grim reading .

The complete league playing record reads : Played  4  Won  0  Lost  4  For  2  Against  27  :  Points :  0 from a possible 12 . All fixtures played in NWWRFL Premier Division

In contrast , we were regular opponents of the Blackpool Wren Rovers Reserve Team and purely out of interest , that record reads :

Played  16  Won  9  Drawn  1  Lost  6  For  48  Against  28  :  Points 27 from a possible 48 : Fixtures played in NWWRFL  Divisions One and Two North

The last 7-0 home league win prior to playing Stingers , was on Wednesday Sept. 7th  2016 , versus Blackburn Community .

Ashley Taylor made her 90th Club Appearance versus Manchester Stingers on April 4th .

Wigan’s 6th Goal scored by Emma Lysons , was the 60th goal scored in the Premier League this season .

The opening first goal scored by Michelle Hunt , was scored directly from a corner kick .

Ellie Threlkeld’s goal versus Stingers took her total to 7 for this season , but overall , she now has 20 league and cup goals in her Wigan career .

Aimee O’ Keefe made her first appearance since the Friendly versus Llandudno on April 2nd 2017 , winning 5-1 and scoring 1 goal .

Possible forthcoming  Player and Club Stats .

Grace Vella requires two Appearances ( Fleetwood Double Header ) to make 50 in total ….. Grace has never been a Substitute .

Megan Edwards requires one Appearance to make 30 in total .

Aimee O’ Keefe requires two goals to make 40 league and Cup Goals for Wigan  ( 29 & 9 )

The Team needs to win four league games without  losing , to make more wins then losses , since the clubs  formation ( 171 to 174 ) .

The Team needs three clear league goals to make it more goals scored , then conceded since the clubs  formation  ( 975 to 977 ) .

If the team can score more then nine goals in their six remaining league matches , this would set a new club record of goals scored by Wigan Athletic in the Premier Division .

The lowest number of goals ever conceded by Wigan Athletic in the Premier Division stands at 25 ….. we have presently conceded 22 .

On This Date  …… April 15th

2001  Greater Manchester Police    ( Away )  Division Two North  ( Won )  2 – 1
