Wigan Athletic Ladies Development Squad in the Lancashire F.A. Women’s County League Cup .

This years League Cup Final versus Burnley Belvedere Ladies will be the 15th game that our club has participated in this particular competition , to which we hold an outstanding playing record . Our first ever appearance in the County League Cup took place on October 7th 2007 , when a First Round away victory was recorded at Preston Rangers . A 5-0 Quarter Final win at Rochdale AFC saw us reach the Semi Final , only to lose 5-2 at Bacup Borough .

The following season (2008-09) we beat Burnley Ladies away 7-2 in the First Round , then the tables were turned in the Quarter Final , losing at Rochdale AFC by a narrow 2-1 score line .

It would be seven years before we would appear in the competition again , but what an impression the club would make last season . Receiving a First Round bye , the team defeated Penwortham Town Reserves away in the Second Round on March 5th in a one sided game by 11-2 . Four goals each from Heather Gallagher and Substitute Ellie Cleary , along with one each from Sam Baldwin , Alex Cullen and Georgia Atherton . A much tougher challenge arrived in the Quarter Final , when North Lancs & District Development where beaten away 1-0 , Ellie Cleary getting the all important winner with just three minutes left to play . An evening home game in May , played on a bitterly cold night , saw Barrowford Celtic defeated 4-1 to reach the Final for the very first time . A first minute goal from Alice Jackson settled the team and two goals followed from Alex Cullen (24 & 68) and Georgia Atherton (28) . The details from the Final versus Penwortham Town Ladies First Team , who at the time , played in a Division higher then Athletic Ladies , are of course featured above .

Wigan Athletic Ladies Development Complete League Cup Playing Record Reads :

Played 14 Won 12 Lost 2 For 62 Against 17 Achieving three Semi Finals and two Finals .

Our Opponents ……. Burnley Belvedere Ladies .

Known as Belvo Ladies , this is the clubs inaugural season in the Lancashire F.A. County League . The Men’s Section dates as far back as 1881 and the Ladies have undoubtedly done their club proud in reaching a Final in their first ever competitive season ! The Ladies Team presently stand in second place in The Championship , one division lower then the Premier Division , occupied by Wigan Athletic Development , having played 8 Games , winning 7 and accumulating a very impressive 21 points to date . The race for the Championship Title appears to be a three horse race between Fleetwood Town Wrens Reserves , Burnley Belvedere and Sir Tom Finney Development . At the beginning of this season Belvo Ladies were originally placed into the County League First Division ( Third Level ) , but later reorganised to play in the Championship ( Second Level ) and they have certainly not disappointed . This will be the first ever meeting between our respective clubs and the game looks to have the makings of a terrific Cup Final .
