Wigan Athletic Ladies Easter Update Compiled and Researched by Rod & Josie Prescott 28.03.18

History Is Made by Wigan Athletic Ladies .

Since our last website up-date on March 15th , a further three league wins have been achieved , giving the team a total of six consecutive league victories , something never previously attained by Wigan Athletic Ladies within the Premier Division of the NWWRFL . The clubs best ever run of consecutive league victories stands at ten , achieved between March 28th and May 2nd 2010 , on our way to winning the Division One North Championship in season 2009-10 . This remarkable run of recent results has propelled the club into second place in the league table , our highest position since finishing as Runners Up behind Champions Bolton Wanderers last season . The battle of the top four places remains as tight as ever , with Stockport County remaining in the driving seat for promotion , but Tranmere Rovers , Wigan Athletic , Burnley F.C. Girls , Merseyrail Bootle and Fleetwood Town Wrens are all watching for any slip up from the Lady Hatters of Stockport . A very exciting finish to season 2017-18 lies in prospect , with our double header at Fleetwood Town Wrens looking especially important to our final league placing , to be played on April 15th .

Derek Booth , Donna Harris and Jeff Johnson .

Our Caretaker Management Team of Derek Booth , Donna Harris and Jeff Johnson have continued the fantastic work of our previous Manager Andy Ainscow , who departed the club back in October 2017 .  Derek had assisted Andy from February 2015 , turning Wigan Athletic Ladies into a team to be respected , within the NWWRFL Premier Division .  Prior to Andy and Derek’s appointment , the team had struggled to adapt within the Premier League since 2010-11 , regularly finishing in 10th and 11th position from a possible 12 teams . Andy immediately turned things around , making the team much more resolute and this tremendous improvement has been continued under Derek’s leadership .

Derek’s impressive league playing record since taking over on October 22nd reads :

Played 14  Won  10  Drawn  2  Lost  2  For  48  Against  16  (GD + 32)  Points  32  from a possible 42 .

In the League Cup we beat Morecambe Reserves , before losing at home to Burnley F.C Girls .

Players and Club Stats Up Dates .

Our 6-0 away league win at Blackpool F.C. Girls on March 18th took the team to joint second in the table . The last time a 6-0 away league win was accomplished , was on September 16th 2007 versus Liverpool Feds Reserves , in a Division One North fixture under Manager David Bradley .  The game saw Chelsea Bloor score her first ever Premier League Goal , having previously been part of our Development side . Michelle Hunt also scored her first league goal of the season and it is interesting to note that there were five different scorers in both home and away matches versus Blackpool , in the two 6-0 wins , Grace Vella also scoring two in each game . Megan Edwards made her first appearance of the season as a playing substitute and Ellie Threlkeld was awarded her first Player of the Match Award for this campaign , now totalling an impressive 7 since her debut in February 2015 .

On Thursday March 22nd we travelled to the TDP Solicitors Stadium , home of Bootle F.C. to face 5th in the table Merseyrail Bootle , for a 7.45pm kick off under the floodlights . Despite the hosts taking a third minute lead through Oleta La Cruz , the Latics Ladies took control of the game and ran out convincing 5-1 winners . Club Captain Emma Valentine made her 50th Appearance for Wigan Athletic Ladies , having started every game and having never appeared on the bench . Grace Vella scored a brace in consecutive away games and Michelle Hunt also recorded back to back goals . The Player of the Match was Awarded to Ashley Taylor , her fourth of the season and 11 since her debut in August 2014 . The other scorers were Louise Ainscow and Megan Hornby , a partnership that had produced 21 league goals up to that point .

The last league game prior to the Easter Break saw the team travel over to East Lancashire on March 25th , to take on Blackburn Community who are fighting for their lives to avoid relegation . Goal keeper Jess Linford had to be alert in the early minutes as Community pressed from the off , but Wigan took control of the game on 21 minutes , when Louise Ainscow scored the first of four impressive goals in a 29 minute spell . This was the first time anyone has scored four goals in a league match since Aimee O’ Keefe completed the feat on Wednesday September 7th 2016 in the home 7-0 victory over the same opponents . Pick of the bunch has to be Lou’s third goal on 42 minutes , surely a contender for goal of the season . A phenomenal powerful run by Ellie Threlkeld down the left , saw a pin point cross reach Louise Ainscow , who placed a terrific shot past former England keeper Jo Phillips , to complete her first half hat trick . Sam Baldwin scored her first league goal of the season on 25 minutes and Louise Ainscow completed her first ever four goal return for our club on 50 minutes . Lou’s first goal was the 50th scored in the league this season , taking her personal tally to 17 in the league and 2 in the cup .  Megan Hornby made her 50th Appearance for Wigan Athletic Ladies comprising of 46 Starts and 4 Playing Sub . Grace Vella was awarded Player of the match , giving her five for the season from 17 league games . Just one player has played in all seven fixtures versus Blackburn Community since our first meeting in September 2014 , this being keeper Jess Linford . Michelle Hunt has played in six and Ellie Threlkeld in five plus 1 playing sub (Ellie also actually debuting against them in February 2015 ) . Following our 5-0 victory , our playing record versus Blackburn Community now looks quite astonishing ! It reads :

Played 7  Won  3  Drawn  1  Lost  3  For  19  Against  19

Finally , the next appearance by Ashley Taylor will be her 90th for Wigan Athletic Ladies . The Club now has just 7 remaining league games to play , which can give us the opportunity to overturn an unwanted statistic . Of the 386 league games played since the clubs formation in 1999 , 170 have been won , 42 drawn and 174 lost ….. the challenge is , can we finish this season by having won more games than we have lost in the clubs overall history ?
