Surprise 10th Anniversary party
1

This year is our 10th anniversary of Wigan Athletic Ladies being formed and because of this

a surprise party was held for Florence Mather who founded the club in 1999 so her daughter Michelle could play the sport she loved so much. Flo would like to thank everyone for such a fantastic surprise party especially Suzanne she said“ I have never been so surprised they did really well to keep it from me” the watch, crystal  plaque, flowers and cards where much appreciated and to see the past players was the best surprise of all, also seeing a full house shows how much effort the organisers put in. A big thank you to Wigan Athletic for the Champagne and signed framed photo of the score board  at the Chelsea game  and a very big thank you to Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez for his personal message  to me that can be viewed on the Web site. Wigan Athletic Ladies has grown from strength to strength and I am very proud of what we have achieved and the shirts we wear with pride, although I may have started the ball rolling it has taken a lot of work by committed volunteers to make the club what it is today and a great big thank you goes out to them all.

on winning the Euxton Girls Summer Tournament on the 28th of June 2009

The girls started the tournament in the best possible way with a comfortable win against Hindley. Outstanding defensive performances from Megan Foster, Lucy Alderson and goalkeeper Chloe Jordan were the backbone for the teams performance. The second match ended the same way beating Westbury Gems. Emma Poole, Chloe Brereton, Lucy Phoenix and Lydia Mills putting in hard work in midfield and attack.

The third game was another fine effort against the hosts Euxton resulting in another win. Great performances from Hayley Croston, Magenta Dean and Megan Roberts helped the girls to another outstanding win.

The Fillies were next up with the girls' team work improving all the time. The game ended in a draw but by then the girls were through to the semi-finals where they met Westbury Diamonds.

The semi-final was a tense affair and ended in a draw following extra time.

The penalty shoot-out was a nerve-jangling affair, with goals from Chloe Brereton and Megan Foster, three superb saves by Chloe Jordan, a miss by Westbury and the girls were through to the final where they met West Lancs League runners-up Birkdale United.

The final was the girls' finest performance.

Chloe Brereton put the girls in front early on, but Birkdale responded and attacked the Wigan goal with venom. A freak injury to Chloe Jordan in goal meant that Magenta Dean had to fill in and put in a great effort to keep Birkdale from scoring. Soon the game was out of Birkdale's reach when Lydia Mills scored again for Wigan. Emma Poole, Hayley Croston, Lucy Phoenix, Megan Roberts, Lucy Alderson and Megan Foster were determined that the winners' trophy would not be going to Birkdale and performed to their best to ensure there was only one outcome which was a well deserved tournament win for Wigan!!

Under 9's tournament

Soccerdome (Wigan)

The U9 girls took part in a tournament at JJB soccerdome on the 24th Jan. The competition was organised by the West Lancashire Girls Football League. Wigan took a 10 strong squad of Abigail, Amealia, Caitlin, Channel, Flossie, Katie, Megan, Olivia C, Olivia P and Vicky. The 5 a-side tournament consisted of 2 leagues of 6 that resulted in each team playing 5 games.

The girls all played extremely well and managed to win 3 of their games and losing the other 2. In the first match they beat Euxton 1-0 with Katie scoring. The second game was a 3-0 win over Fillies with Megan scoring 2 and Olivia P 1. The third game was a 3-1 win  against Birkdale with Katie scoring 2 and Amealia 1.

The fourth game was a 4-0 loss against Aspull Canarinhas. The 5th and last game resulted in a 2-1 loss against TMS with Abigail scoring the only goal. Well done also to Robyn who played for the Litherland girls who were short of a player. Robyn contributed well by scoring a goal and also saving goals by playing goalkeeper.
