Wigan Athletic Under 11’s started there season well with a convincing win over a good Bolton side.

Wigan started on the attack from the first whistle, with Lucy Clifford testing the Bolton keeper in the first minute. Bolton responded to this and Bethany Stoneley protected the goal and her injured toe to keep the home team at bay.

Latics responded to this and started to play excellent football keeping possession, fine wing play from Courtney Norburn on the right and a tidy turn and pass set up Emma Lysons for a shot which was saved by the keeper. Latics continued to build and won their first corner after Georgia Green had a shot turned round the post.

Bolton kept Latics out and started to pass the ball around and create their own chances, good defending from Georgia Broadstock and Ellie Dooney kept the score line level. Latics broke out of defence and when Courtney was fouled, Lucy stood up to take the resulting free kick, the Bolton keeper did her job and turned the ball away for another corner.

Latics continued to create chances and grew in confidence as the first half progressed, Bolton created an opening with some good passing and moving and shooting just wide of the far post. The Latics defence stood firm and closed the ball down well to prevent further opportunities for Bolton.

The first goal came on 15minutes after good passing by Courtney and Emma resulting in Georgia green turning and shooting giving the keeper no chance to open Latics account for the season.

The goal spurred both teams on as Wigan on as they looked to add to their lead and Bolton came close to equalising just minutes later but were thwarted by Georgina and Ellie who put the ball out for a corner.

Wigan extended their lead on 18minutes, with a flowing passing move involving Lucy, Courtney and a through ball for Emma who placed the ball in the far corner to make it 2 nil.  Latics continued to press and create chances up until half time and defended as a team to keep Bolton at bay.

The second half opened with a cracking goal from Lucy, who gave the keeper no chance as she riffled a shot which hit both posts before crossing the line. This early goal boosted Wigan’s confidence and in the next few minutes, Georgia, Emma all had half chances saved by the Bolton keeper, Ellie continued to trouble the Bolton defence with her long throws, and Georgia Broadsotck marshalled the defence and protected her keeper.

Bolton didn’t give up and continued to work hard to create chances and ensure Latics keeper Bethany kept warm.

Courtney came close with a free kick which whizzed past the top corner, Emma and Lucy both had further chances to increase the lead. Courtney forced a mistake from a Bolton throw, passed the ball to Lucy who fired a shot straight into the Bolton goal to give Latics a four goal cushion.

Latics continued to press looking for more goals and number 5 came when Courtney picked up the ball on the right wing beat 2 defenders and scored in the far corner to get herself a well deserved goal on 41 minutes.

Bolton continued to press the Latics defence but Georgia and Ellie held firm and protected their keeper throughout the game clearing the ball and interlinking well with midfield

The final goal came on 44minutes when Georgia Green grabbed her second and Latics 6th with a neat finish from 6yards out after good approach play by the team.

A great result for Latics and a great start to the season, with the girls defending and attacking as a team, keeping their shape, passing the ball around and above all Enjoying their football.

Well done girls.
