After a lengthy lay off due to postponements it was business as usual at the JJB with an emphatic 8 - 0 win over the visitors from Penrith.
Boasting a full squad and with the luxury of 4 substitutes, Wigan took the field with the tried and tested 4-1-4-1which has served well all season.
Sam returned in goal. Back four of Chopper, Hannah, Thommo and skipper Heather. Jenny holding midfield, with four across the middle, Emily, Lauren, Lyndsey and Katie. Billy again leading the line looking to add to her impressive goal tally. A strong bench included Helen, Lynne, Aimee and new recruit Kate who is a good acquisition to the squad.
Wigan dominated from the off and despite the long lay off they played some lovely football and didn't let the away side into the game.
The 4-0 half time scoreline didn't reflect the glut of chances squandered and this was to be repeated in the second half. Despite the 8-0 final score the coaching staff we left bemused by the number of chances missed. Hard to please ? Not really, if goal difference is to count, gilt edged chances must be put away. That said Andy and Dave have ordered the barn door for Wednesday's training session, focusing on shooting.
A feature of the game was Katie Macc's dead ball delivery at corners. Every one was on the button. The consistency was unerring, and even more of a challenge was that the corner flags were sited in a mud pit. Despite the quality still no headed goals to show.
Second half changes saw Aimee and debutante Kate replace Lyndsey and Emily as the team switched to a 4-4-2. A slight injury to Jenny brought about a straight swap with Lynne.
Plenty of quality goals included in the 8 from Billy (4), Katie Maac (2), Jenny (1) and Aimee (1). G of M went to Katie Mac, undoubtedly her best game of the season.
Credit to the visitors who played up to the final whistle.
Good result and Andy and Dave are now looking for a final push to the season end. 4 games to play and next up it's a home match with Whitehaven.
More of the same girls. Well done.

Match Report |

The top of the table clash saw Wigan take their 100% record on the road to league leaders Curzon Ashton. This was always going to be a tight encounter, with 2 evenly matched sides taking the field.
A full strength Wigan squad included the welcome return of Aimee after a long spell on the sidelines.
A strong bench included Aimee, Lynne, and Helen, a rare luxury this season.
As predicted the game was very cagey from the start with both sides testing and probing, trying to find the all important first goal. The settled 4-1-4-1formation (Sam /Chopper, Hannah, Heather,Thomo / Jenny / Lyndsey, Lauren, Katie, Emily /Billy) was adopted from the start to provide a solid base and rely on the counter using Billy's pace up top. Goal attempts were scarce from either side in the opening 30 mins and it was the home side who came closest with a long range effort that struck the outside of the post. A warning of what was to come, as Ashton took the lead 5 minutes later from a speculative free kick 25 yds out, which Heather uncharacteristically remembered to forget to head clear ! Keeper Sam was unsighted in the process and the ball sneaked in at the near post.
Going a goal down spurred the team into action and right on the break the first piece of quality football saw a lovely move rounded off by Billy with a low angled drive, 1 -1.
One change at the break saw Lyndsey replaced by Helen, which meant a pack re-shuffle, Heather pushing into centre mid alongside the hard working Lauren with Helen slotting in besideThomo at the heart of the defence. With the chuckle brothers in control at the back, full backs Chopper and Hannah providing a sound base and Heather pushing forward it was business as usual.
Mid way through the half saw Jenny replaced by Lynne, looking for her 3rd goal in as many games. The last change saw Katie replaced by Aimee wide right. Despite the fresh legs Wigan couldn't find the breakthrough, although the game should have been wrapped up in the 80th minute, when Billy, clean through on the keeper, just cleared the bar with a lobbed effort. The home side finished the stronger and a fine save by Sam at the end earned a valuable away point and maintained the unbeaten record.
This was an impressive display all round and the hard work by everyone payed off. All in all a real enjoyable game of football with both teams contributing to a high quality, sporting contest.
Next game see's Wigan entertain Euxton. |

Match Report |

The first league game of 2008 saw Wigan take their 100% unbeaten record on the road for the match against Lancaster City. The return fixture at the Giant Axe Stadium was to prove a different proposition from the corresponding match at the JJB, with a much improved Lancaster side on show.
With keeper Sam out through injury and skipper Heather absent, a squad of only 11 made the trip up the M6.
Stand in captain Lauren won the toss and chose to play against the Force 9 gale in the first half. Not one of Lauren's better decisions as it turned out !
Andy and Dave took an instant liking to the double glazed dug out, but had to vacate come kick off time.
The howling gale reduced the game to a farce at times and it was no surprise that the home side spent long spells in the Wigan half, taking full advantage of the conditions.
Katie Mac was an able stand- in between the posts and spread confidence throughout the defence. Chances were few and far between and the 0-0 half time scoreline was a moral victory to Wigan.
The half time team talk focused on using the advantage of the strong wind, however, as the teams emerged the wind had dropped, and with it the advantage.
Attacking from the off, Wigan struck early in the second half. From a corner on the left debutante Lynne prodded in from close range (Kuyt special) with the home defence in some confusion. The lead was soon doubled with a similar close range effort from Emily.
Rather than kicking on it was the home side who finished the stronger and scored with 10 mins left on the clock. Despite some late pressure Wigan held on to record an eighth successive league win.
The empty bench meant the girls had to work hard and one or two picked up minor knocks.
All in all a good win. Full credit to Katie in goal. A good back four display from Chopper, Hannah, Helen and GoM Thommo. Midfield did well with Emily (1), Jenny, Lyndsey, Lauren and Lynne (1) all working hard, as did Billy up front leading the line.
Good performance girls. |

Match Report |

Table toppers Wigan travelled to Burnley for the first league meeting between the two sides.
With Heather unavailable for selection (run that by me again) the skippers armband was handed to Lauren.
In a game Wigan were expecting to win comfortably, Burnley showed good determination and spirit from the off.
After a pretty even start any early nerves were settled on 10 mins with a fine strike on the edge of the box by Jenny.
She followed this up within 3 minutes with a better effort, lobbing the keeper from 25 yds. The 2 goals allowed Wigan
to settle and play their normal game albeit on a heavy pitch. Further first half goals followed from Katie Mac (2) (this is becoming a nice habit)
Billy and Lauren, all top drawer finishes.
The 6-0 scoreline at the break was a fair reflection of the half. With the game effectively won Wigan seemed to relax
and allowed the home side into the game. An injury to Jenny on the hour meant that Wigan went down to 10 players
for the remainder of the game. The travelling squad of only 11 fit players would always leave the team exposed to injuries and the home side took full advantage.
The energy sapping pitch took its toll on the 9 outfield players and Burnley netted 3 times in the second half. Disappointing to concede the way we did and the return of the
Achilles heel, failing to head clear at corners, is something Andy and Dave will be determined to put right.
The game finished at 3-8 and full marks for the effort and commitment shown by both teams.
Once again everyone played well and another difficult decision for the GoM vote, this time shaded by Jenny. Another good display from keeper Sam and her quality gloves. Chopper and Hannah again looked lively. Thomo and Helen formed a good centre back partnership. The midfield of Lauren, Jenny, Lyndsey, Emily and Katie Mac all put the effort in and supported lone ranger Billy who worked the home defence hard.
No game next week. The next match is the eagerly awaited cup semi final clash with first division side Bacup Borough. A capacity crowd is expected at the JJB in anticipation of a favourable result.
Well done again girls, keep up the good work. |

Match Report |

Wigan made the long trip to Whitehaven on the back of a very impressive League Cup quarter final win over First Division side Rochdale.
Going into the game protecting a 100% record confidence was not lacking.
The usual pre-match meal of pasta and chicken was ditched in favour of Ronald McDonald, much to the amazement of the team's nutritionist.
The girls took full advantage of the warm up in an attempt to gauge the bounce and roll on the plastic pitch. Clearly not long enough, as the early through balls were consistently over hit.
The normal smooth passing game was soon in evidence though and full use was made of the wide pitch. Wigan peppered the home side's goal with shots, however, every effort seemed to find the keeper with unerring accuracy, much to the frustration of everyone. Against the run of play Whitehaven took the lead on 20mins with a clear cut penalty after Thomo was caught 'on the wrong' side and brought the striker down. No complaints. Two further scares were to follow when the home side struck the bar and Wigan had to call upon keeper Sam to make a great save with her legs when faced with a one on one.
Half time and Wigan trailed 1 -0. 'No need to panic', was the theme of the talk at the break. The quality of the football being played would surely be rewarded in the second half.
Indeed, shortly after the re-strart Wigan were rewarded when Billy netted with an equaliser. A fine move between Jenny, Emily and Lauren put Billy through and she beat the keeper low to the left.
Having worked hard to get back into the game the girls eased off to allow the home side a bit more freedom, clearly a point for discussion in training.
Two more trademark finishes from Billy made the game safe and was a fair reflection on the game as a whole.
Good performances all round and again difficult to pick a GoM. Sam did the business when called upon. Chopper and Hannah again solid at the back and effective going forward. Midfield 5 of Jenny, Lauren, Emily, Katie Mac and Lynsdsey knitted the play together and worked hard off the ball. Thomo and Heather coped well with the Whitehaven strikers. Billy weighed in with another hat trick which was just reward.
Well played again girls. Very impressive start to the season.
Next up is the return fixture with Whitehaven at the JJB.

Wigan eased through to the semi final of the League Cup with an emphatic 5 - 0 away win at First Division side Rochdale.
The home side suffered their first defeat of the season to a Wigan team full of confidence and ideas. That's two Division 1 scalps in successive rounds.
The girls finished the game with calf's the size of Belgium, no thanks to the heavy pitch and long grass.
Early Wigan pressure saw the away side camped in the Rochdale half and the girls were rewarded with a goal in the first quarter.
A Katie Mac corner was turned into her own net by a luckless Rochdale player, put under good pressure by Jenny at the near post.
Wigan then had to wait until close to half time for a second. Cutting in from the right Katie Mac was tripped inside the box and the spot kick was despatched into the back of the net by Lyndsey.
Keeper Sam was hardly called on in the first half with Chopper, Hannah, Heather and Thomo snuffing out any potential attack.
Billy had a poor return this week with only 2 goals ! Both came in the second half and they were just reward for her hard work leading the line. No change there then.
A long range shot from Lauren contributed to the scoresheet after the home keeper had gone walkabout. The goal came after a fine move the full length of the pitch, started by Jenny facing her own corner flag.
The one change saw the introduction of Helen for Jenny mid way through the second half.
Good performances all round and again it was difficult to select the GoM. Lauren's all round effort and work rate eventually tipping the scales.
The girls now eagerly await the semi final draw which guarantees another match up with a first division side as Wigan remain the only representatives from Division 2 in the competition.
Next week is back to league action and sees the long away trip to Whitehaven. Thomo's applied for her visa and Billy's plotting a McDonald's route to Cumbria.
Well played again girls, lets keep the unbeaten run going.

This was a hard fought game and part of the learning process for the girls as they continue to adapt to open age football. The visitors Sefton fielded a much more experienced side and took the game to Wigan in the opening exchanges.
Sefton took the lead on 15 mins following a rare error by keeper Sam who misjudged the flight and bounce of a shot. This put Wigan in the unaccustomed role this season of going a goal behind early doors. Andy and Dave were looking for a positive response and it duly came with a quick equaliser on 20 mins scored by the ever improving Billy. Pouncing on a through ball her excellent first touch and early strike gave the keeper no chance.
The remainder of the half was pretty even and it stayed at 1 - 1 up to the break. Andy and Dave encouraged the girls to play to their strengths and to reproduce the football they are well capable of.
The second half brought about a clear improvement. The team's ability to change tactics showed intelligence and a willingness to learn. The free flowing football and teamwork came out for the second half and the lead was doubled on 60 mins by another trademark goal from Billy.
At 2 -0 down Sefton didn't really pose a threat and if anything dropped deeper as the game wore on. A 3rd goal from Katie Mac 10 mins form the end finished the game off. A near post strike after giving the keeper 'the eyes' was just reward for the team effort in the second half.
One change in the game saw Helen replace Lyndsey mid way through the second half.
A very pleasing second half display was the topic of Andy and Dave's post match summary. This showed that the girls re-grouped at half time and did the job required by playing their brand of football.
Good to see Sam bounce back following the rare error and make some good saves diving at the feet of the on coming forwards. The defence all round looked comfortable. One worthy point to note was Hannah's great covering and goal line clearance, which was to tip the balance in the GoM vote. The midfield showed a vast improvement in the second half and competed well all over the park.
The result keeps Wigan top of the league and unbeaten this season. Well played girls.
It's cup action next week with a trip to 1st Division side Rochdale. Confidence is high going into the game and a good performance is anticipated.
Let's keep up the good work girls

What a great start to the new season. Hardly a local derby, a resounding 9 - 1 way win at Penrith was a great introduction to Open Age Football. The girls, making the step up from U16's level last season, were understandably a bit apprehensive at the start.
Any early nerves were soon lost after Sophie 'Billy' Elliot's early angled strike from 8 yards nestled in the bottom corner. Playing in the unaccustomed role of lone striker, Billy led the line well and her usual hard graft, intelligent running and not to mention 4 goals won her the girl of the match vote from Andy and Dave.
The back 4 of Hannah, Chopper Maloney, Laura and Heather was as solid as usual, playing in front of new keeper Sam making her debut with the squad.
The Wigan girls outpaced the opposition all over the park and some of the pass and move football was a treat. This was typified by a goal resulting from a move the full length of the pitch started by a throw out from keeper Sam, who was confident throughout.
The starting midfield of Lauren, Jenny, Lyndsey, Katie Mac and Emily (who was unlucky with a 20 yard curler that struck the bar) all gelled well and linked the play together nicely.
The 5-0 half time scoreline dictated the team talk at the turn round and two changes were made, Jenny and Katie Mac replaced by Helen and the youthful looking Simone. Slotting Helen in at centre back allowed Heather to move into her preferred midfield role. After 55 mins Katie Kelly came off the bench to replace the hard working Emily. An inspired substitution as Katie scored with a screamer from 2 yards.
A rare lapse in concentration allowed the home side a consolation goal. By the end the 9 -1 scoreline was a credit to the girls who acquitted themselves nicely to the riggers of open age football. Credit to both teams the match was played in a good spirit and no injuries to report other than Laura Thommo's jet lag.
On the score sheet were Billy 4, Jenny 1, Lyndsey 2, Katie K 1, Simone 1
Next up is Curzon Ashton at home. One or two things noted for Wednesday's training session, however, a great start. Well done girls.

A goal fest at the JJB saw the girls stretch their 100% record to 4 games. A 13-0 win over visitors Lancaster City meant 2 consecutive clean sheets for keeper Sam and an impressive record of 25 for, 1 against.
Billy once again showed she's no Shevchenko with another 4 goal haul, this time matched by the impressive Lauren. That's 2 goal machine's in the side. Also on the scoresheet were the Macca twins, trying to out do each other in the 'over 20 yarder' category, skipper Heather 2 and a penalty form Lyndsey after Billy was brought down in the box. Some nice goals amongst the tally and really difficult to pick the best of the bunch. With Jenny on squash duty a pack re-shuffle saw Helen make her first start of the season at centre back alongside 'no studs' Thomo, modelling the prototype non grip boot. The benefit of playing together for a long time is really beginning to show in the football. The high skill level and terrific team spirit bodes well for the season.Fair to say the defence had a quiet day frustrating the opponents forward line. This came to a head when Chopper doubled up as a punch bag for a Lancaster forward who was lucky not to see red.Everyone played well on the day and Andy and Dave's G of M went to the hard working Emily in left midfield. No injuries to report other than a headache for chopper. Next up an eagerly awaited cup clash away to Div 1 high flyers Preston Rangers.

Match Report |

Wigan maintained their 100% record with a fairly comfortable 2 - 0 away win over near neighbours Euxton.
Going into the match as league leaders the girls played with a confidence befitting their position and were rarely troubled in the game.
On the score sheet again was 'Billy' Elliot netting with a sharp volley from 8 yds just before the break. That's 6 in 3 for 'The Goal Machine'.
The final score line didn't reflect the game. The away side dominated possession and missed a glut of chances, hitting the woodwork twice. Fair to say though, the Euxton keeper had a fine game, the highlight of which was a great tip over from a Billy overhead kick in the first half. Quality.
Another clean sheet from keeper Sam impressed the coaching staff.
At 1-0 the girls couldn't fully relax and it was the second goal on 75 min’s that settled the nerves and the contest. A speculative 20 yard 'daisy cutter' from raiding full back Hannah drew an error from the otherwise faultless Euxton keeper. Flock ? Not a chance.
Full backs Chopper and Hannah bombed forward at every opportunity causing confusion in the home defence.
The midfield 5 of Emily, Jenny, Lauren, Lyndsey and Katie Mac moved the ball around cleverly and Lauren's work rate off the ball was enough to win
her the girl of the match, and this despite a broken hairband.
Katie's dead ball delivery at corner kicks was first class and skipper Heather came close in the second half with a bullet header that just passed the upright.
The only change saw Emily replaced by centre back Helen on the hour mark which meant a re-shuffle with Heather pushing into midfield. Up to that point the central defensive pairing of Laura and Heather coped well.
Nice to have the luxury of 3 solid centre backs to be able to rotate.
Played 3 won 3 and remain top of the league. Perfect start and well played girls. Not faultless by any means but only minor tweeking required. No injuries to report, sponge only made a brief appearance on the pitch.
Even Thomo remembered the pre- match meet time and place.
No game next week, so it's double training before the next match, at home to Lancaster City.

The first home game of the season saw Curzon Ashton making the short trip to the JJB (somebody tell Thomo where we play the home games).
Both sides were boasting a 100% record, played 1 won 1!, so something had to give.
In a close, hard fought match Wigan edged through, thanks to a great strike from Billy 'Golden Boots' Elliot on 70 mins. That's 5 in 2, not bad for a makeshift lone ranger.
Wigan opened up with the same starting 11 as last week, playing with Andy and Dave's continental
4-1-4-1 formation, straight out of the Wenger coaching manual.
New keeper Sam continues to impress. Another solid display and a clean sheet gives confidence to the back 4.
Wigan had the advantage in the opening 35 mins of the game and had most of the play. The visitor's came more into the game and it's fair to say
bossed a 10 min period either side of the break.
The back 4 of Chopper, Hannah, Laura and skipper Heather were again on
good form, coping well with Ashton's attacking play. Hannah's all round covering and intelligent forward runs eventually won her the girl of the match vote, although all the girls played well on the day.
The midfield quartet of Lauren,Lyndsey,Katie Mac and Emily, together with holding player Jenny worked hard throughout and created chances a plenty.
Indeed, Emily was unlucky with a good chance just before the break, which saw her shot just clear the bar.
The teams turned round at 0-0. One change at the break saw Katie Mac replaced by Simone wide right.
Billy's stunning 20 yard strike on 75 mins prooved to be decisive and the visitor's chased the equaliser playing 3 up top.
Other changes saw Katie K replacing Emily on the left and Helen replacing Lyndsey, whose last contribution was a good defensive header from a
dangerous corner. The changes brought fresh legs onto the field and saw the game out.
At the end, no injuries to report and the girls remain top of the league.
Well done everyone.
Next up a local derby away to Euxton.
