Urmston Meadowside Atticus Cup winners

May 14th, 2007

Wigan Athletic Ladies U13s won the AFC Urmston Meadowside Atticus Cup at the 2007 Summer Festival. The team won their group unbeaten (4 wins 1 draw) conceeding no goals. After a 1-1 draw (after extra time) they knocked out Flixton by scoring all 5 penalties. In the Final they met the host team Urmston Meadowside, who they beat 2-0.

League Plate Final

May 7th, 2007

Wigan Athletic Ladies F.C – 4

Bolton Ambassadors – 3 (aet)

Wigan Athletic Ladies finished off their season in style with a win over Bolton Ambassadors to get their hands on a piece of major silverware for the first time in the club’s history. It took an injury time equaliser and extra time winner to seal the result but victory tasted just as sweet for the Wigan players, especially after they thought the game had slipped away from them late in the second half. After taking the lead midway through the first half, Wigan were pegged back twice by a determined Bolton team, and even found themselves behind with less than 5 minutes of normal time remaining. After equalising with literally the last kick of the game

Wigan knew they had the upper hand both physically and mentally going into extra time and found the winner that they so richly deserved. On paper these 2 teams were pretty evenly matched; both had finished fourth in their respective parallel leagues, with only 1 point between their totals for the season. It was only to be expected then that the game started openly, with both teams getting a feel for their unfamiliar opponents; the last time these 2 teams had faced each other was 2 seasons ago before the leagues were split into North and South Divisions. Both teams managed to get the ball into their opposition’s penalty area early without creating any clear cut chances or worrying the goalkeepers unduly. As the game developed, Wigan Athletic Ladies began to get a foothold in the game and force the Bolton team into plenty of defensive work. This was rewarded when top scorer Kerryn Hill got on the end of a forward ball from Emma Catterall and beat the onrushing Bolton keeper to the ball and directed it goalwards. The Wigan team and travelling supporters waited with baited breath for the net to bulge and it did exactly that as the ball bounced once and hit the roof of the net to give Wigan the advantage.
The goal seemed to give Wigan confidence and they attacked with much more purpose for the remainder of the half, creating further chances from balls in behind the Bolton back line and also from set plays, but they couldn’t find any further goals before the break. In fact Bolton could have drawn level when a Sharon Entwistle clearance in her own penalty box span dangerously off her boot and towards her own goal, but thankfully it fell into the grateful arms of Andrea Murray and Wigan’s lead remained intact.

Wigan left the changing rooms after half time knowing that all they had to do was keep their opponents at bay for the next 45 minutes to lift the silverware at the end of the match, but Bolton obviously had other things in mind as they breached the Wigan line 3 times in the second stanza! Striker Faye Whittaker must have been disappointed to say the least to score a second half hat-trick and still end up on the losing side. Her first came early in the half from a set piece after Bolton won a free kick out on the left wing for hand ball. A pin point cross from Ruth Harrison was met with a firm volley at the far post to draw the game level at 1 goal each.

Wigan however responded in the best possible way and within 2 minutes had hit the front again. Kerryn Hill scores her second of the game and her 19th of the season with a neat finish past the outstretched hand of the keeper following a great flick over the defence from Entwistle. Latics must have felt they had got off the hook after giving away their lead so early in the half only to get it back again, but worse was to come for them. despite further chances for both Hill, who had a goal harshly disallowed after a fantastic strike into the top right hand corner when the linesman raised his flag for offside, and strike partner Charlotte Benson, who brought out a tremendous close range save from Deborah Hill in the Bolton goal, along with long rang efforts from Catterall and Entwistle, Wigan couldn’t find the goal which would have given them a 2 goal cushion and surely dampened the resistance of their opponents more than the pouring rain which arrived in the second period already had. Latics’ failure to put themselves out of reach was to come back to haunt them in the final 15 minutes when Bolton first drew level and then put themselves in the lead for the first time in the game with almost identical strikes from Whittaker. Wigan stood off Bolton captain Amanda Gettins in midfield twice and allowed her to thread balls through for Whittaker to strike across the keeper from the edge of the box. With her hat-trick goal coming with less than 5 minutes remaining, Wigan Athletic thought that they had thrown away the one thing that they had worked so hard for all season, but something inside told them that they weren’t beaten just yet. They were almost undoubtedly beaten a minute later when Whittaker broke through again only to see her effort, which would have given Bolton a 4-2 lead, pushed onto the bar after an inspired reflex save from Murray in the Wigan goal. Substitute Kelly Hutchinson collected the rebound and Latics breathed a sigh of relief. This seemed to spur Wigan on and they threw everything they had at the Bolton goal. Their never say die attitude was rewarded when Ruth Talbot, with barely 30 seconds of added time remaining, controlled the ball in midfield and played a curling pass over the defence into the path of substitute Claire Rice on the right wing; she carried the ball forward and into the Bolton penalty box and with a super cool finish under the circumstances slotted the ball in at the near post to the delight of the 150 or so Wigan fans who had travelled to Runcorn to give their support to the team, along with the players, the bench, and in particular manager David Bradley who set off down the touchline in celebrations that Alex Ferguson would have been proud of! The referee blew his whistle to restart the game, then blew it again immediately to signal the end of the 90 minutes, and Wigan knew there and then that the game was there for the taking. Bradley composed himself enough to convey to his players that they had been given a second chance and they had to take it with both hands.

Wigan had prepared meticulously for the game, putting in extra training sessions at exotic locations such as Crosby

Beach (mind the quicksand girls!!), and not one of the players were prepared to let their sacrifices be for nothing.
Holding the psychological advantage of rescuing a draw in the last 30 seconds, Wigan went into extra time determined to come away with nothing less than the trophy. Fitness also played it’s part as Bolton faded in the added 30 minutes and Wigan took control of the game. They had regained the lead before the end of the first period of added time when Charlotte Benson was rewarded for all her hard work throughout the game by scoring what proved to be the match-winning goal. As the ball was fed in from the right,

Charlotte squeezed the ball under keeper Hill and into the corner of the net before being engulfed by the majority of the Latics players.
Unlike in normal time, Wigan defended their lead without further difficulty and the one goal margin proved enough to see them crowned as League Plate Winners for the first time, something that everyone at the club should be extremely proud of!

International Ladies Day Cup

April 21st, 2007

Thursday 19th April

Wigan Athletic Ladies   2  V Leigh RMI  1

Wigan exacted revenge for their previous 2 defeats in this annual encounter by beating Leigh RMI at Robin Park Arena with goals from Anne-Marie Atherton and Charlotte Benson. Despite this being their first win in this fixture, the match was much more poignant to the

Wigan side for the simple fact that it saw the return to action of key midfielder Carolyn Leach who has been missing since the final game of last season following her battle with breast cancer. ‘Baz’ as she is known to her team-mates, made her comeback with a sterling 25 minute appearance in the second half, almost stealing the limelight completely by scoring a wonder goal from all of 30 yards!

It would have been a truly fitting comeback for Carolyn, who at 41 is the most senior player at the club and has faced the adversity of the last 12 months with a smile always on her face. Throughout her treatment she has actively fundraised for the Genesis Appeal, the club’s chosen charity which raises money to fight against breast cancer, and has also maintained her role as coach to the Wigan Athletic Ladies under 13s team. Baz never once gave up hope of once again pulling on the shirt of her beloved Wigan Athletic and lacing up her boots to get back out into the thick of the action, and her appearance in this match was greeted with a rapturous reception.

It was no coincidence either that

Wigan started to play a higher level of football following her introduction into the heart of the midfield. She was immediately a calming influence, playing the ball around to feet and making her trademark strong runs from the centre which Wigan Athletic Ladies have missed so much this season. Add this to her fantastic effort on goal, which many of the

Wigan players claimed had crossed the line after rebounding off the angle of post and crossbar and bouncing back across the face of the goal and back into the field of play, and it was almost a perfect return for Carolyn.

The result I suspect would be enough though to ease any aches and pains which may be present this morning. Considering that this was Wigan’s second game in 48 hours, the performance of the team as a whole was outstanding as they worked together for the entire 90 minutes to collect their first piece of silverware of the season but hopefully not their last, as they face Bolton Ambassadors in the final of the North West Regional League Plate Competition at Runcorn Pavilions on the 6th May.

It was an honour to be invited to participate in Leeds United Under 10’s first ever football gala.  The gala was held at The Ings, Wetherby on 7th April and involved seven very talented and competitive teams, which involved no less than three division champions. Wigans opening match against Preston North End proved to be a tough encounter against a well organised team.  A late goal from Preston saw them come away with all three points and despite Wigans valiant efforts they lost the game 1 – 0. The next match for Wigan was against division champions Leeds United Whites.  Leeds United threatened Wigans goal on numerous occasions and had several shots  saved by the ever dependable BJ Heaton.

Wigan were also unlucky not to score with both Jenny Preston and Lydia Mills both having goal bound shots saved.  With minutes remaining

Leeds were awarded a penalty after a foul in the box.  The

Leeds player struck the ball well but goalkeeper BJ pulled off a superb diving save to deny

Leeds the win.  The match finished 0 – 0. The matches certainly weren’t getting any easier for Wigan as their next opponents were division champions, Burnley.

Wigan knew they had to dig deep against a strong side which is exactly what they did.  Wigans defence stood firm with Alex Whittingham and Megan Foster putting in hardworking, solid displays.  The match ended a goal less draw.
Once again Wigan faced division champions opposition in Leeds United Blues.Wigan started brightly with Sarah Webster lively and full of running in midfield.  Alicia Dean was unlucky not to score after her shot was gratefully snapped up by the

Leeds ‘keeper.  Unfortunately

Wigan were unable to break down the

Leeds defence and this game ended 0 – 0.
Wigans first win came courtesy of their next opponents Boldon.  This was a truly fine display by the girls who created more chances and passed the ball well.  They were awarded with two well taken goals by Chloe Brereton and Lydia Mills.  Again Wigans defence was solid and the game ended  2 – 0 to Wigan.Wigans final opponents of the day were Manchester United who are always a hard team to beat.

Wigan almost took the lead after an early shot from Chloe Brereton was just wide.  All the girls battled bravely with Alexandria Heaton working her socks off in midfield.  United snatched all three points with a late goal and

Wigan were very unlucky to come away with nothing.
With all the matches now having been played, the girls had a nail biting wait to see if they had done enough to reach the semi finals. Unfortunately Wigan missed out by just one point.  However, each and every girl should be proud of their performances both individually and as a team. Manchester United and Preston North End reached the final with Preston the victors.  One consolation for Wigan is that these were to only two teams had beaten them on the day. All in all this was a very enjoyable and rewarding day played in brilliant sunshine.  At the end of the day nine very tired girls were awarded with a medal for their participation and efforts.  Parents and managers were awarded with bright red sunburnt noses!!

BURSCOUGH v WIGAN ATHLETIC LADIES

April 3rd, 2007

North West Women’s Regional Plate Semi Final

BURSCOUGH 1 v WIGAN ATHLETIC 1 (aet)

WIGAN WIN 6-5 ON PENALTIES)

Wigan booked their place in the North West Women’s Regional Plate Final after a penalty shootout victory over Burscough.

In glorious sunshine on a fine spring day,

Wigan fully deserved their place after dominating for long periods of the game, despite going behind early on in the match. They equalised before half time and went on to control the match in the second half and both periods of extra time.

The game was moved from Burscough’s usual pitch to Victoria Park, home of their male counterparts, and was watched by a crowd of approximately 100 spectators. It seemed initially that this unfamiliar setting had got to the

Wigan team as they started very slowly indeed, allowing Burscough to get a foothold and take control of the game in the early stages. With a strong wind blowing into their faces,

Wigan struggled to make any impact on the game and were finding themselves defending wave after wave of attacks from the home team.

It was a frustrating period for the players and coaches alike especially after such meticulous preparation, and it got worse when Sophie O’Toole opened the scoring for Burscough with and audacious effort from the edge of the box, helping a ball played into her over shoulder and into the far top corner of the goal.

Wigan were stunned, going a goal down was certainly not in the script, but the goal and a switch of position for Ruth Talbot and Rachel Taylor seemed to stir them into action.

Taylor slotted into at centre half to add some extra pace to the defence, while Talbot was given the freedom to play the ball out of defence to the Latics forwards who were desperately short of work.

With Charlotte Benson drifting out right, and Anne-Marie Atherton finding space on the left, Wigan started to launch some attacks of their own, and it wasn’t long before Atherton had levelled the match with a looping effort from the edge of the box which fooled the keeper and dropped into the back of the net to bring Wigan back into this vital game.

With the scores level going into the dressing rooms at half time, Dave Bradley issued a rallying cry to his players to show what they were really made of, and got just the response he would have been looking for.

Wigan started the second half with much more purpose and it was the Burscough defence and goalkeeper who had it all to do to keep the Latics at bay. Shots reigned in from all angles, as

Wigan played the ball around and found space and time for the first time in the match. Sharon Entwistle and Charlotte Benson both saw efforts turned away by keeper Louise Currie, before Ruth Talbot had a shot cleared from the goal line with the keeper beaten. Substitute Nicol Meredith narrowly missed on a couple of occasions as the one way traffic towards the Burscough goal persisted until the final minute of the initial 90, but the scoreboard operator was never troubled despite Wigan’s efforts.

And so the tie moved into extra time, but the pattern of play remained the same. Despite turning back into the wind

Wigan continued to dominate and have more chances than their hosts, who looked to have settled for the lottery of the penalty shootout.

Wigan had further chances to win the game and started to get the feeling that it wasn’t going to be their day. They showed much more hunger and desire than the home team but just couldn’t find the finishing touch to win the tie in a fitting manner.

As both periods of extra time came and went without further score, it was down to one final test of nerve to decide the finalists. The penalty shootout proceeded in stark contrast to the game. Each team scored it’s first 5 penalties; some of the clinical finishes on show would have out the

England team to shame! It was then down to the ‘extra’ players to step up and be counted. Unfortunately for Burscough their 6th choice taker came up with the first miss of the contest, dragging her effort wide of the left hand upright and leaving Carly Hutchinson with the chance to win the tie for Latics and give them the victory they had so richly deserved. With nerves of steel,

Hutchinson fired her penalty high into the goal mouth - everyone held their breath as the ball struck the underside of the crossbar before bouncing down over the line and nestling in the back of the net!

An impromptu chase and mass pile of bodies ensued as the

Wigan players celebrated their place in the final. Let’s hope there is much less drama involved on the 6th May when they take on their opponents Bolton Ambassadors at Bamber Bridge F.C.
