Match Report

Jess Jones (MOM)
Leah O'Loughlin
Millie Proctor
Alix Seddon (GK) (1)
Kiera Jones (Capt)
Emma Taylor (1)
Grace Duffy
Ruby Woolham (Sub)

Wigan travelled to Euxton on Sunday with a contingent of 8 players, the girls got off to a great start, despite expecting a tough encounter! Starting line up, Alix Seddon in goals, Millie and Jess in defense, Leah, Emma and Kiera across midfield and up front Grace Duffy, whilst Ruby started as sub.

The match got off to a flying start with some good attacking football from both sides. Euxton opened the scoring with a well worked move through midfield. Alix Seddon did well in goals firsts half, stopping a variety of shots from the Euxton strikers! Jess and Millie worked together in defense to soak up more pressure from the home team, eventually getting the ball up to Emma Taylor in midfield who took on the Euxton defense, who then let rip with a fantastic shot on target to score Wigan's opening goal.

Kiera Jones and Leah O'Loughlin got stuck in for the remainder of the half, enabling Grace Duffy to get on the ball and attack the Euxton goal. Wigan managed to hit the crossbar, the inside post and pepper shots at the opposition goal but just couldn't get that second goal!!!!

Half time - Euxton 1 Wigan 1 .

Second half Kiera Jones had a really positive performance in goal, whilst Millie Proctor stepped up to midfield to accompany Emma Taylor and Ruby Woolham, whilst Alix Seddon took her favoured position up front.

Wigan continued to apply pressure giving both Alix and Emma good opportunities to bombard the Euxton goal and apply pressure up front, eventually the continued onslaught paid off and Alix scored Wigan's well deserved second goal.

However, this seemed to inspire the Euxton girls who came back at Wigan with a vengeance, good passing and movement through midfield enabled their strikers to hit home with three more goals in quick succession.

Wigan seemed to be on the back foot at this stage and struggled a little with Euxton surging forward in the last few minutes and just before the final whistle Euxton scored their fifth goal.

Final score Euxton 5, Wigan 2.

A well deserved MOM trophy goes to Jess Jones this week for a determined and solid performance in defense!

Wigan played well in spells throughout this game, providing numerous opportunities in front of goal and showing a good appetite to go forward and attack the opposition goal, our defense at times was superb, with well timed tackles etc. This was one of those games where the score line does not reflect the overall game.

Well done girls and thank you to all travelling family and friends!

The U8's got off to yet another flying start on Saturday, at home, (Hawkley Hall High School), on an all weather surface, v Golborne.

The pace of the game was fast and furious with both teams getting stuck in from the start. Ella Thompson captained the Wigan team and was involved in Wigan's gritty midfield performance throughout, working alongside Emma Taylor and Molly Maguire.

Leah O'Loughlin got Wigan off to a great start with her first goal,(a super strike in the bottom corner). Golborne retaliated with some good passing and movement in midfield, attacking Wigan from all angles, Alix Seddon in goals (1st half), kept Wigan in the game with some great reaction saves and some good distribution, both Millie Proctor and Grace Duffy were solid at the back for Wigan.

Emma Taylor scored Wigan's 2nd goal with an individual top class performance taking on the Golborne defence and beating the goalie with a well timed shot.

Half time Wigan 2 - 0 Golborne.

Hannah Thompson replaced Ella Jones 2nd half whilst Millie Proctor put on the GK gloves and Alix ('the Rottweiler') Seddon, got stuck in immediately up front! Second half Wigan took charge of the game with some relentless tackling and movement from Molly, Grace, Hannah and Leah which lead to some great opportunities for Alix to pepper shots at Golborne's goal and notch up the next 4 goals for Wigan.

Emma Taylor controlled Wigan's defence and contributed to Wigan's attacking force from midfield. Millie Proctor had a quiet 2nd half in goal, as much of the game was played in Golborne's half.

Another strong performance from the team again this week, which makes it difficult to select the MOM, however, the recipient this week was Leah O'Loughlin due to an overall improved performance! Well done everyone, and a big thank you to family and friends who supported the girls throughout!

Jessica Jones, Millie Proctor, Kiera Jones,

Ruby Woolham, Leah O'Louglin

Goals:- Alex Jones (capt) 2, Alix seddon 2

Emma Taylor 1

Wigan started the game well, plenty of battling in midfield for the ball from Emma Taylor, Kiera Jones and Ruby Woolham, both teams attacking and defending well, end to end football.

A good surge from Wigan enabled Emma Taylor to win the ball in midfield and thread a great through ball for Alex Jones up front to latch on to and beat the goalie with a well struck shot.

Hesketh retaliated with some good attacking football, whilst Alix Seddon in Wigan goal first half, provided some good shot stopping to keep Wigan in the lead for a while longer.

Hesketh continued to attack and push forward applying pressure on Wigan's defence, both Jess Jones and Millie Proctor worked hard to keep Hesketh out but the endless pressure resulted in four quick goals from the home team, before Alex Jones was able to pull one back for Wigan with a great individual effort.

Half time score 4 - 2 to Hesketh.

Wigan started the 2nd half with a restructured team implementing more pace and strength in midfield, Leah O'Loughlin replaced Millie Procter, due to a slight injury, whilst Alex Jones and Alix Seddon swapped positions to get Wigan off to a good start, Leah O'Loughlin battled well in midfield to provide Alix Seddon, up front with some great opportunities one on one with the keeper, eventually her persistence played off with a great shot and Wigan's 3rd goal.

Wigan now were on top of the game continually attacking Hesketh's goal, Millie Proctor returned to the field and further strengthened Wigan's effort with a great 4th goal coming from Emma Taylor running from midfield.

At 4 - 4 the game swung one way then the other, Alex Jones kept Wigan in contention with some good shot stopping efforts until just before the final whistle Wigan pumped the ball forward to an energetic Alix Seddon who took on the Hesketh keeper and slotted away her second goal and a winner for Wigan!

A great team effort from Wigan and a well deserved MOM performance from Alex Jones,

Well done everyone and thank you to all our parents and travelling supporters.

Match Report

Emma Taylor (1) Alix Seddon, Alex Jones (GK)

Millie Proctor (MOM) Kiera Jones, Jessica Jones,  Ruby Woolham (Capt), Sub Leah O'Loughlin(used)

Wigan travelled to Liverpool on Saturday to play Fillies U9's, and came up against a well organised and good passing side.

Filles started strongly as expected putting Wigan under pressure from the starting whistle! Wigan defended extremely well, as the whole team got back to break up Filles continuing surge forward, both Millie Proctor and Jess Jones diffused most of Fillies attacking play, with the help of some good saves from Alex Jones in Wigan goal.

Wigan found it difficult at times to break into Filles half of the pitch but maintained some gritty midfield work from Kiera Jones, Emma Taylor , Alix Seddon and Ruby Woolham up front, to keep the opposition 'on their toes'! However, Filles managed to brake through Wigan's defence on three occasions before half time to go 3 - 0 up at the interval.

In the second half a rearranged Wigan team managed to hold their own and put together some good passing football, (with Leah O'Loughlin coming on up front replacing an injured Jess Jones).

Wigan made some good chances and attacked Fillies Goal, Emma Taylor going closest with a shot travelling across goal and shaving the far post! Wigan were now more inspired and played some impressive and positive football, providing a great game for the spectators with end to end football. Despite this Fillies broke through twice more midway through second half to go 5 - 0 up!

Wigan remained positive and were determined to score before the final whistle, Alix Seddon replaced Alex Jones in goal, and Jess Jones replaced Kiera Jones, their determination finally paid off when Emma Taylor's well placed shot put Wigan on the score sheet and sent the supporting parents into raptures!

MOM performance from Millie Proctor, solid defending throughout. Well done to all concerned and Thank you for the great parental support!

Match: Golborne u8's v Wigan Athletic u8's
Date: 9/10/10
Result: Won 5-2
Match Report

The U8's started their first season for WALFC with a great performance on Saturday v Golborne Girls, both teams got off to a good start with some good midfield battles for the ball from Leah O' Loughlin, Hannah Thompson and Darcy Bawker, (in defence for Wigan).

The game remained pretty even for the first ten minutes until Golborne broke through Wigan's defence and scored a well placed shot past Millie Proctor in wigan goal.

Wigan replied within minutes with a well taken shot on target from Emma Jo Middlehurst, playing up front for Wigan. Shortly after Alix Seddon continued to make some great forward runs from defence with the ball putting Wigan 2 - 1 up!

Golbourne continued to push forward, which paid off as they scored their second goal just before half time, 2-2 at the break.

A change of personnel in second half put Wigan on the front foot,  Emma Jo Middlehurst coming close once again. Emma Taylor punished Golborne second half with some strong runs through from midfield linking well with Ruby Woolham and Leah O' Loughlin, scoring 3 goals to complete an overall fantastic performance for the U8's and a well earned MOM performance.

Well done girls!

Match: Dynamo Rangers u9's v Wigan Ath u9's
Date: 9/10/10
Result: Draw 2-2
Match Report

Dynamo started the game full of confidence and put Wigan under immense pressure for the majority of the first half with some very strong midfield play, good passing ability and penetrating runs into the final 3rd.

Wigan replied with some excellent defending deep in their own half, some gutsy perfomances from Millie Proctor and Jessica Jones in defence whilst Alex Seddon in Wigan's goal provided some great reactive saves keeping Dynamo from scoring for a short while, however, their relentless pressure in the Wigan half payed off scoring two successive goals before half time, despite some good work from Ruby Woolham, Emma Taylor, (midfield) and Leah

O' Loughlin, Alex Jones both up front for Wigan.

A slight change of personnel in second half saw Wigan come back at Dynamo with more determination and positive runs from midfield  from Emma Taylor and Alix Seddon, linking play with Darcy Bawker up front, and both scoring a goal each to level the score and bring Wigan right back into the game for the final whistle!

A very exciting game with loads of end to end play

.

MOM performance goes to Alix Seddon.

Well done girls

Result: Won 2-0
Match Report

A fantastic start to their first season for the u9's, at home to Hesketh Colts, winning 2 - 0.

Wigan got off to a flying start going 1 - 0 up within a minute of the start from a great individual effort from Emma Taylor in midfield.

Hesketh continued to break forward and attack Wigan's goal, but some great defending from Darcy Bawker and Millie Proctor along with some good reaction saves from Jessica Jones in Wigan goal kept Hesketh from scoring.

Great work again from both Alex Jones and Emma Taylor in midfield put Alex Seddon through on goal for Wigan's second just before half time.

Hesketh came out second half and pressurised Wigan with some good passing football, a change of personnel this half saw Ruby Woolham, Kiera Jones and Leah O'Loughlin work hard to keep Hesketh out and retain a clean sheet for Wigan.
